    The Reality of Food Poverty…

    by  • May 23, 2014 • foodbank, Silklife Foodbank

Food for £1 a DayLast month we shared that one of our supporters, Sarah, was challenging herself to live on £1 a day for food to raise food donations for the Foodbank and awareness of food poverty here.  Here’s her story of how she found the challenge:

‘It was very tough at the start of the week, I found myself thinking about food all of the time and what I was going to have for my next meal. I don’t think it was necessarily because I wasn’t eating enough but more because I knew I couldn’t just snack when I wanted or have a choice when it was a mealtime. Towards the end of the week it got easier but I was definitely bored of porridge and toast by the time Friday arrived! Also, although I only did the challenge for 5 days, it became apparent that if I had to live off that diet for any length of time, it would be difficult to get a healthy variety of vitamins on board. Fresh fruit and vegetables are expensive! I hope it got everyone I told about it thinking about the cost of food and what it might be like to live with less choice.’

We’re so grateful to hear her testimony as it just reinforces why we we do what we do!

    A Note About Cleaning Products…

    by  • May 16, 2014 • Donations, Sainsbury's, Silklife Foodbank

Cleaning ProductsWe have been so grateful to receive donations of cleaning products recently.  As you know we want to help preserve peoples’ dignity and being able to keep their house clean, despite struggling financially, is important to many of our clients.  However we have recently had a leak of a cleaning products in our donation box in Sainsbury’s and this is obviously a major food safety issue!  Therefore we would ask that if you would like to donate any cleaning products you could drop them off at Silklife Church on a Tuesday morning between 9 and 11am.  Thanks so much!

    What We Need This Month…

    by  • May 14, 2014 • Silklife Foodbank

015744This month we have been given lots of tuna, pasta, baked beans, soup, tea and UHT milk.  Due to your generosity we won’t need any more for the next few weeks.  Instead we’d be really grateful for: tinned hotdogs/ravioli/macaroni cheese; sachets of instant pasta/rice; cup-a-soup; rice pudding; and bolognese sauce.  Thanks so much!
